Our company is in the process of working on some overall company initiatives. Everyone is involved: top to bottom. It is really a great to see people at all levels and across departments come together. I honestly have never felt or experienced anything quite like it. The process was not a very complex one and I have summarized the major themes in this article. Start today and build out the excitement at your own company.
What I have learned so far in 2016 that has made it a great year:
Build and Nurture the Excitement of New Changes
Too many people are scared of changes these days. The media focuses on the doom and gloom for the most part and it is hard to get excited about bad news on a regular basis. When people are excited about new challenges and
Give Your Employees a Voice
Make sure people have the opportunity to express their views and opinions. Too many times, employee ideas are stymied and often unheard. Everyone wants to know that someone is listening to them. Ask people to write down their suggestions. It can be daunting trying to remember conversations in the hallway.
Promote Excitement Within the Company
When the excitement is experienced inside the company it will be reflected in the interaction with clients on the outside.
Keep Focused on the Big Picture
Continue to remain focused on the company’s goals and objectives and make sure your employees can start to see this picture. In the past, I have often been too easily distracted with the details. Make sure a current project list is maintained and updated with specific start and end dates. Monitor progress and communicate this information to your supervisors and staff.
Focus on the People as a Whole and Recognize Outstanding Work and General Appreciation
People want to be noticed. In the past, I would walk right by someone without saying a word. Imagine the signal you are sending as a leader in your company to your employees. I am always thankful to a particular employee who stopped me and asked why I never say anything when I pass him in the hall. I could not come up with a compelling reason, so now I make it a point to acknowledge the people around me. (Hint: most of the time the issue for most leaders is their embarrassed that the person knows their name, but they, (as a leader) do not know theirs) Always work at knowing the names of your employees.
If You Write Articles or Share Information with Your Contacts Consider Sharing Good News
Good news is rare these days. Tell people why you are full of excitement; it is the best way to get your story out there.
If you are struggling to bring excitement to your company, consider rallying your company around one of the following:
- A Particular Charity- timing of this might be hard this time of year
- A Major Project – cleanup of the company, painting, replacing chairs desks
- Have a Kickoff Speech for the New Year- it’s not too late, bring everyone together in the same room, this is powerful
- Identify Some Change Leaders in Your Company – empower these people to lead the project.
- Talk to Your Close Vendors and Share the Excitement with Them.
Make 2016 a year to remember! It starts with excitement!
